- In 1913, they were renamed as the American Eskimo to avoid discrimination towards the breed because of their German origins
- During the 19th century in America, the breed performed regularly in trick-dog acts in traveling circuses throughout America, prized for their beautiful appearance, intelligence and agility.
- During World War I, it was considered "un-American" to have a dog with a German name
- In the American Eskimo community, the dogs are normally just called Eskies.
- Many owners state that their Eskies engage in behaviors that are almost cat-like
- American Eskimo Dogs are known for being very aggressive barkers; which make them good watch dogs
